Fraudulent Payment Requests Related to Land Use Applications
Fraudulent Payment Requests Related to Land Use Applications
The City has recently become aware of fraudulent emails targeting applicants involved in land use applications that require review by the Planning Commission. These messages may appear to come from City staff, Planning Commissioners, or County officials and request payment or sensitive information.
We want to assure our community that the City will never request payments or confidential information through unofficial or suspicious communication methods. If you receive a message that seems unusual or unexpected, please take extra caution and contact the Community Development Director, Michael Eggett, directly to verify its authenticity.
To help inform and protect the public, we have attached a public service announcement issued by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) titled “Criminals Impersonating City and County Officials in Phishing Emails for Planning and Zoning Permits.” This notice provides additional details about the scam and offers guidance on how to recognize and avoid fraudulent activity.
If you believe you may have received a suspicious message or been targeted by this scam, you are encouraged to report it through the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3). A link to the reporting form is included in the attached FBI notice.
If you have any questions or would like assistance verifying a communication, please contact the City directly. We are here to help ensure your application process remains safe and secure.
