Ways to Protect Our Water & What You Can Do to Help

Centerville City has a source protection plan that helps protect Centerville’s water. Two-thirds of our water comes from deep wells and one-third is bought from Weber Basin Water. The water you drink could be easily polluted by:

  • Antifreeze
  • Gasoline
  • Lawn and garden chemicals
  • Paints
  • Used motor oil

All this can be washed down the gutter and can filter down through the ground aquifer. Please note that we have a source protection plan and it can be reviewed at the Centerville City Public Works Department located at 655 N 1250 W in Centerville.

Considerations

Facts to consider:

  • 1 gallon of gasoline can pollute up to 600,000 gallons of ground water.
  • 1 gram of 2-4d (a common household herbicide ) can contaminate 2.6 million gallons of drinking water.
  • 4 quarts of oil can cause an 8-acre oil slick if spilled or dumped down a storm drain.

Backflow Prevention & Testing

Backflow occurs when water flows in the opposite direction within your plumbing system, which can allow contaminants to enter the public drinking water supply. Backflow prevention assemblies help protect your home — and our community’s water system.

To ensure these devices are working properly, annual testing is required.

Our City partners with Backflow Solutions, Inc. (BSI) to manage backflow compliance notifications, tracking, and reporting. Property owners with a backflow prevention device will receive communication directly from BSI regarding testing and deadlines.

If you receive a notice from BSI, please follow the instructions to complete your required testing and submit it below.
